a beginner’s sock

Yesterday, someone asked me about a good pattern for beginner sock makers.  I really don’t consider myself an expert in this subject, I’ve only completed 1.6 pair, but I do think that I one of the hand knitted socks biggest fans.

Here’s my suggestion, with my limited (but free) knowledge.  Socks really aren’t hard (something I would have never had said a year ago).  There are two basic techniques to making them.  With four or five double-pointed needles or with two circular needles.  This debate seems to really come down to personal preference.  I like two circulars, but I’ve never tried dps.  I personally think that it would be easier for a beginner to hold two needles instead of 5, so I would recommend the 2 circular technique and this book, Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles, by Cat Bordhi for technique.  There are also two basic techniques for doing sock heels (again – somewhat limited knowledge), a heel flap or a short row heel.  I’ve done both and I believe that the short row heel is easier.  I would recommend this pattern, Alison’s Ankle Socks, from the blue blog.  It uses yarn that is a little heavier that typical sock yarn and consequently needles that are a little bigger.  So the socks won’t seem to take forever!  I would recommend making the ankle a little longer, this pattern is truly for an around the ankle (bone) sock, I prefer my ankle socks a wee bit taller.  I did three rows of ribbing and then 5 rows of knitting (st st).  When I make this pattern again I’ll do probably near 10 rows of ribbing and the same of st st.

There they are … free thoughts!!!

socktoberfest

I have joined Socktoberfest!  It is a month long sock celebration.  It is for everyone, from those that have never made socks to the experienced designers.  I am very excited about socktoberfest because my sock yarn stash has just quadrupled.  I am going to use this celebration to use up some stash and make some holiday presents.

I haven’t had much to say about my knitting lately, because I haven’t been doing much knitting.  Next week though, I am taking a vacation from work!  A much needed vacation.  A vacation to relax, knit, and read.

I did finish the back of the sweater vest I’m making to wear to the wedding.  I got about half way up the front V portion and realized that I wasn’t doing the decrease properly, so out it came and I haven’t touched it since.  I still think I can get it done though.

I also started my second pink ankle sock.  At a meeting last week I turned the heel and started down the foot.  I have a couple of meetings today so I might get close to the toe part and finishing.  It is quite certainly time to finish some socks, it is getting cold here.  Fall is in full swing.  The night are chilly and the leaves are starting to change.  Time to make some socks!

the yarn that I made

The spinning class was awesome!  I need a wheel!  I don’t just want a wheel!  I need one!  My yarn is a little rough around the edges, but here are some pictures anyway.

I bought some roving to practice with, the ladies that had used a drop spindle for a while did an absolute wonderful job, and I’ve got a call into my dad to make me a couple of drop spindles.  I’ll practice with those for a couple of months years while I save up for a spinning wheel.

I also got to see my friend Dyan this weekend!  It was exciting.  We haven’t seen each other for about 3 years, we hadn’t even talked until about a month ago.  The crazy thing is that, as Dyan mentioned, even though we haven’t talked in about three years we are still have the same intersts and are doing the same thing.  Get this, she took a spinning class a week ago, one week before mine!  Isn’t that a crazy coincidence!  She also seemed to really enjoy her class.  Her’s was at the Hill Creek Fiber Studio.  It sounds like she might have gotten a better technical background and she certainly picked up more terminology than I did.  Her class was two days though … I think my teacher might have mentioned some of the terms Dyan was flashing around like a pro, but I probably was zoned out.  It tends to happen when I’m tired, bordering on the bored side of things, and just really ready to get my feet wet with whatever the teacher is talking about.

Because Dyan missed my wedding :-( and because I just feel like sharing tonight (and because these are a couple of the very few existing good pictures of me) here are a couple of wedding pictues.  I really had a hard time narrowing it down.  The chapel was the Mildred B Cooper Memorial Chapel, in Bella Vista AR (USA).

Grey’s Anatomy – season premiere tonight!  Yippee!!  Only 47 minutes until it starts.

Paula and I are taking a spinning class this weekend!  I’m super excited!  Just what I need another fiber obsession!  Check out the Yarn Barn of KS.

I started my second pink ankle sock today.  I turned the heel and am on my way down the foot.  I’ve got to get in a couple of rounds before Grey’s starts!  35 minutes!!

Brown Sheep Co

The Brown Sheep Co is my favorite yarn manufacturer.  I use their products as often as I can.  If you haven’t tried their stuff I encourage you to give it a try.

A cool thing about them is that they are located in Nebraska, only on the other side of the state from me.  Unfortunately it is about an 8 hour drive. I have an Aunt and two cousins in the little town they call home, so I’ve been there and I’ve had the tour.  Awesome!  If you ever find your self in western Nebraska check it out!

I recently found a new source for Brown Sheep products and I made a huge order.  HUGE!  Sixty-five balls of yarn huge!  I am a scientific knitter based on Stephanie’s classification in Knitting Rules!  So I have a plan for this yarn; all except one which is part of a birthday present, so I do have a plan for it (present) and I am going to give a pattern with it so I even have a plan for what she will do with it.

In case your curious about how I plan on using this 65 balls.  The 6 balls of Lamb’s Pride Worsted are going to become Hubby’s hat and glittens. One ball of the Lamb’s Pride Superwash Worsted is going to become mittens for me and the other is part of the present I mentioned before.  The 3 balls of Lamb’s Pride Bulky are going to be Hubby’s winter slippers.  The 12 balls of Top of the Lamb Worsted are going to be my dream sweater (Breezy Cables, see my project page).  The 9 balls of Nature Spun Worsted are going to be a sweater for Hubby.  And the 33 balls of Wildfoot Luxury Sock yarn, those are going to be socks, lots of socks!  I didn’t get any handpainted sock yarn, mostly solid colors, so I’ll be doing a lot of stripes and hopefully some argyles.  I’d love to make argyle knee socks!!

Where is all of this yarn?  It is at my mom’s house (6 hours away) waiting for me to come and pick it up.  She could mail it, but I want her to hold on to it so I can get some of the other projects I have going on finished before I dive into it.  We are going on vacation in 2 weeks and my folks house is our first stop.  So before that trip I want to finish my sweater vest.

Here’s what I had this morning, I’m nearing the end of ball three.  IMG_3630.JPG  This pattern is supposed to be worked flat, back and forth, but as you can see I’m working it in the round.  This is my first attempt at modifying a pattern (see Nessie), so I’m really hoping that all goes well, especially since I have a deadline about 3 weeks away.  I’m nearing the point now where the pattern calls for the front to be divided for the different sides of the v neck, but this is supposed to happen 12 rows before the back is cast off for arm hole shaping.  Since I working in the round and doing the pieces at the same time I don’t know when this arm hole shaping on the back will happen.  Right now I see two options. One to put the front stitches on a holder and finish the back.  Two is to calculate how long I think I want the back will be (usually pattern length plus and inch or two), and then figure out how the front will relate to this length and continue in the round until I reach the front division length and then incorporate this into my rounds.  I’m leaning towards option 2, because I want to do as much as possible in the round (it is much faster), but I think the option 1 is probably more fool proof.  Any suggestions on this process are welcome!

I mentioned yesterday that I’d finished my “pink scarf” for the challenge. Here’s a close up of the fabric, I really like this tweed look.IMG_3629.JPG

Since I’ve got the 33 balls of sock yarn waiting for me at my folks house I probably didn’t need this, but like I said it was 50% off and it is self striping, none of the Brown Sheep sock is self striping.  The colors they had yesterday on sale were pretty basic, nothing too eye catching.  Here’s what I got IMG_3627.JPG

I think I’m going to go work on the vest for a while; see what kind of mess I can make out of it.
