The first

This is my first knit-blogging post ever. I’m very excited, I’ve even put the never-ending-pink-sweater, the sweater-that-just-wont-die down for the evening to get this blog thing up and running.

Explanation of the Name.

Like purl – the knit stitch, and ewe – the female sheep … maybe, if that is as far as you want to go that’s fine, I’ll take what I can get, but here’s the story.

My mom and I decided that we wanted to starting selling some of our and my father’s handiwork. Don’t be alarmed, this is just another attempt we’ve made at doing something that really makes us happy. It didn’t last long, not for me anyway … I think Mom might still be considering it. I was talking to her on the phone (so I don’t really remember what it was that I was searching for) and I came across the perfect word: purlewe (pur loo). It is from middle english and it means …. piece of land on the edge of a forest … which perfectly describes the atmos at my folks place, good for them. So I took that spelling and meaning and applied the more recent meanings at dictionary.com for purlieu and got what I wanted. A place to frequent that is on the outskirts of where I am.

The name stuck even though the original purpose has faded for me.  I love my knitting to much right now to put a price on it.  I put too much effort and love into my pieces to put a price tag on them and see them disappear.  Odd, yes maybe, but that’s it.  I just can’t help but wonder now where some of the stuff I’ve made (stuff from the very beginning) is now.  Like my very first scarf … it went to my best friend Julie G.  I won’t blame her if it is at the bottom of a land fill  – it was a little skinny, a little short, and a little scratchy – all the attributes of a bad scarf, but I still wonder where it is.  Or the hats I made for the newest additions to the family, did Paul ever wear his hat?  Odds are probably no, unfortunately.  I guess this is the nature of the beast, but this is why I don’t sell, at least not yet.
